John F. Shockley is an attorney in the Ward, Hocker & Thornton Lexington office. He is an accomplished litigator licensed to practice in Kentucky and Indiana. A 2019 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Law, he has been recognized among the legal profession’s rising talent, earning Super Lawyers: Rising Star honors from 2023–2026 and Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch from 2023–2025.
He focuses his practice on defending clients in complex litigation, including medical negligence, wrongful death, personal injury, and constitutional claims under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. His courtroom experience includes serving as second chair in medical negligence trials, assisting with jury selection, preparing and examining witnesses, and managing exhibits. He has successfully drafted and argued dispositive motions leading to dismissals with prejudice and has briefed appeals before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the Kentucky Court of Appeals, the Indiana Court of Appeals, and the Indiana Supreme Court.
Beyond trial and appellate advocacy, John has extensive experience in negotiating settlements, deposing parties and witnesses, preparing litigation reports, reviewing and analyzing medical records, and working closely with retained medical experts to develop strategic case defenses. His combination of legal acumen, persuasive advocacy, and meticulous preparation has made him a trusted advocate for his clients in high-stakes matters.
